Penn State Brandywine's Student Affairs department is excited to welcome applications for a Registered Nurse (RN) to provide primary health care to students. As a crucial member of the Student Affairs team, the Student Health Services Nurse is responsible to the Senior Associate Director of Student Affairs for maintaining acceptable standards of nursing care. This is an 83.3% full-time equivalency (FTE) position. The person in this position will work 10 months per year, August 1st through May 31st. Graduation from an accredited school of nursing (Associate's Degree in Nursing); current Pennsylvania licensure, in good standing, as an RN with four years of related nursing experience that is applicable to the assigned work area are required.
Position responsibilities include, but may not be limited to, performing assessments, examinations and treatments; maintaining documentation and records; triaging and basic nursing care according to nurse protocols in accordance with PA registered nurse licensure; providing self-care advise based on assessments; instructing students to seek urgent care or to call 911 in emergency situations; educating and providing preventive health information, appropriate ordering and reporting of test results, lab results, immunization results, and proper use of consultations; serving as a resource for sound interpretation and application of professional standards of practice; help ensure student compliance with health-related University requirements; advocate for students by attending to concerns, assessing situations, reporting concerns to supervisory personnel, and instituting/recommending appropriate action; adhering to policies, procedures, and protocols; establishing and maintaining collaborative relationships with students, faculty, staff and to achieve desired outcomes; departmental quality improvement activities, committee work, and special projects when appropriate; attending in-service trainings and continuing education programs to maintain and improve clinical knowledge and skills; providing appropriate referrals for students requiring medical care to the Penn State Brandywine consulting physician, area urgent care centers, or medical specialists in the community as needed.
This position requires an RN capable of working autonomously, while collaborating with University Health Services and a consulting physician as needed. Additional duties include representing Health Services on campus committees and at special events, serving as the campus Well-Being Ambassador, serving on the BTMT (Behavioral Threat Management Team) and CARE Team (Communicate, Advocate, Refer, and Educate), and coordinating health and wellness events such as blood drives and flu clinics, data collection and reporting to University Health Services (UHS) annually, campus educational programming, and other duties as assigned.
Preferred qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in Nursing, nursing experience in college health, emergency room, public health, and school health, experience and competency in health education and health promotion programs and activities, demonstrated knowledge of OSHA, HIPAA, and FERPA compliance regulations and educational institution nurse protocols, policies, and procedures. The ideal candidate exercises sound clinical judgment, careful listening, critical thinking, and effective decision making in the performance of duties and acts as a collaborative member of the Student Affairs team participating in departmental/campus meetings and sharing concerns, observations, and ideas.
