The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) is the sixth largest transportation system in the United States, with a vast network of fixed route services including bus, subway/elevated, trackless trolley, light rail, and commuter rail serving a 2,200 square mile service region.

We are currently seeking a Paralegal (9194) - Litigation in the Litigation department.

SEPTA currently requires all new employees to be fully vaccinated and provide proof of vaccination at their pre-employment medical appointment.

Salary Range: Min: $53,716.00 - Mid: $67,132.00 - Max: $80,548.00

  • Note: Starting salary not to exceed midpoint.

Limited telework may be permitted for this position in accordance with SEPTA Policy.

OVERALL DESCRIPTION

Serves as a key member of trial team, along with lawyer, secretarial supervisor and legal assistant, responsible for defending SEPTA in litigation from filing of complaint through final resolution, in accordance with Legal Team Best Practices.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Fully digests and follows Legal Team Best Practices.
  • Conducts initial assessment of case file to identify Court deadlines and additional investigatory requirements, (i.e. surveillance, background checks, employment history, and/or social media review). Coordinates surveillance and conducts or manages completion of necessary investigations.
  • Determines if complete and current medical records have been obtained and analyzes and summarizes those records.
  • Prepares court filings required to obtain any necessary deadline extensions and works with adverse counsel to perfect those extensions.
  • Drafts discovery requests, answers to discovery and subpoenas.
  • Keeps client contact informed of case status.
  • Prepares court filings or edits and proofreads court filings prepared by trial lawyer.
  • Prepares and organizes deposition and trial exhibits.
  • Participates in internal and court conferences concerning the management and disposition of cases.
  • Works with subject matter experts retained for case defense.
  • Prepares SEPTA witnesses for depositions.
  • Assists trial attorneys at arbitration and trial.
  • Complies with all Authority and departmental safety and security policies and procedures as well as all applicable job safety responsibilities. Reports any safety concerns, compromises or hazards affecting operations, the public, self and/or other employees. Responsible for personal safety and is encouraged to promote the safety of others.
  • Performs legal research as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Associates Degree in Paralegal Studies from an accredited program plus four (4) years’ litigation experience as a Paralegal required; OR, a candidate with a Paralegal Certificate from an American Bar Association (ABA), National Federation of Paralegal Association (NFPA) or NALA-approved program plus five (5) years litigation paralegal experience; OR, a Bachelor’s Degree in Paralegal Studies plus two (2) years of litigation paralegal experience will satisfy the minimum position requirements.
  • In depth knowledge of legal terminology, court rules, court procedures and e-filing required.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel and Outlook required.
  • Candidate must be flexible and solution oriented with the ability to work under pressure.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and writing skills (including grammar, punctuation, spelling and proofreading) required.
  • Must have ability to work independently and/or in a team under little supervision.
  • Must be able to handle highly confidential matters.
  • Must be detail-oriented with the ability to manage time effectively.

IDEAL QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • SEPTA’s Sovereign Immunity and PA Rules of Civil Procedure preferred.
  • Experience with Power point and case management software preferred.
